Pomegranate juice and skin health

Pomegrenate Juice

It is said, what you eat is what you look like. It means, what you eat definitely shows on your face. Our skin is delicate, complex and unfortunately the most exposed organ of the body. Therefore, it requires proper care and caution. People make all sorts of outwardly efforts like using commercial products, cosmetics or even cosmetic surgeries so as to look young and fresh. Sadly, all of that goes haywire if one is not particular about the diet. Healthy diet devoid of junk food and full of fruits and vegetables work better for the skin because that cleanses the body from within by getting rid of the toxins.

Pomegranate is one wonder fruit loaded with natural nutrients and substances that makes the skin healthy looking. Botanical name for pomegranate is “ Punica granatum”. It originated from Persia and is now cultivated throughout the world. This fruit contains a variety of vitamins and minerals that help improve the general well-being of a person. Pomegranates are loaded with anti-oxidants that facilitate metabolism of the body. Good glowing skin is always indicative of good digestion. It makes sense to replace packaged juices and energy drinks with fresh pomegranate juice. Having a glass per day would definitely do wonders for the skin.

This is evident if we look at the nutrients that are present in a pomegranate. Few of them that are essentially good for skin are listed below:

1. Vitamin C

Pomegranate is a rich source of Vitamin C, which we all know is necessary for naturally glowing skin. Vitamin C also regulates the production of sebum and growth of the cells and hair follicles.

2. Iron

Not having enough hemoglobin deprives the skin cells of much needed oxygen, which results in pale, dull looking skin and also conditions like acne and premature aging. Pomegranates are rich in iron content and helps in building hemoglobin. It can be observed that regular intake of pomegranate juice would make one’s skin soft and supple with improved complexion.

3. Vitamin K

Studies reveal that 1 cup of pomegranate juice provides around 25.9 mcg of vitamin K, which is a significant portion of what one needs on a daily basis. Vitamin K is known to improve the over-all look of the skin. Vitamin K is responsible for clotting of blood in times of injury, which keeps the bruises relatively small, resulting in healthy-looking skin.

4. Folate

A cup of Pomegranate juice contains about 60 mcg of folate and one needs around 400 mcg on a daily basis. It is a well-known fact that folate is useful for warding off any birth defects. Besides that, this crucial vitamin is also essential to keep the skin healthy. Deficiency of folate triggers a condition called “Vitiligo”, wherein patches appear on the skin that lack pigmentation. Folate is also known to reduce the symptoms of a form of inflammatory skin condition that goes by the name “seborrheic dermatitis”.

5. Potassium

Potassium is needed for the skin to stay hydrated and healthy. Pomegranate contains ample amount of potassium. A cup of pomegranate juice contains around 533 mg of potassium, which is a significant portion of the daily requirement of 2000 mg. Potassium takes cares of the fluid levels present in the body. So not getting enough potassium causes loss of moisture from the skin. The result is dry, flaky, patchy, uneven and dull looking skin. Including a cup of pomegranate juice in your diet daily, would help the general condition of one’s skin.

6. Manganese

Skin comprises of connective tissues. Manganese plays an important role in forming these tissues. One cup of pomegranate juice contains 0.2 mg of manganese. Even though, this is relatively a small amount, but given that the total requirement per day of manganese is only 1.8 to 2.3 mg, 0.2 mg makes a significant portion. Manganese also is a potent antioxidant that helps fighting aging symptoms that are triggered because of environmental exposure.

Pomegranate thus is a gift from the nature, regular consumption of it as a fruit or juice does wonders for our skin and over-all general well-being. Juice can even be applied as a face pack and rinsed away upon drying for that instant glow.
