Can someone elaborate on food supplements?

I have started going to gym recently, and my fitness trainer, has advised me to take food supplements, instead of consuming a lot of food in one go! I want to know about these food supplements, as I have never consumed such a thing in my life (Although, I am not sure, if this is the reason for me start gym!). Can anyone tell me more about food supplements, and confirm if they are effective in providing essential nutrition? Thanks.
