How does a food diary template function?

I am an emotional eater, and I tend to eat a lot, when I feel low on myself. Lately my sister advised me to take up to a food diary template, and see if it could bring any change in my eating habit or not! I want to know if someone has ever tried a food diary. Moreover, I would like to know how does a food diary template functions! Can anyone please advice aptly? Thanks.
