Civet cat’s poop is rocking the coffee cups in India after it proved to be one of the exotic coffee blends in Indonesia. Animal Coffee, makers of Kopi Luwak, in Indonesia feed the cherries to the Luwak cat, who secretes the undigested part of the cherries in form of beans.
These coffee beans are roasted, grounded and are sold at $300 and hotel Kanishka selling the same coffee at Rs.850 is not a bad bargain. Kanishka is gaining from the sales as Kopi Luwak has a unique flavor of its own. The reason is the enzyme present in the digestive tract of cats imparts a bitter taste to the beans. Many Indians are unaware of this fact and it is better that they enjoy the bliss; once the secret of the Rs.850 cup is out, I doubt about Indians sipping from that cup.
The makers of Kopi Luwak are planning to process the cherries through the digestive tract of bats…let’s wait till the bats leave their mark on the coffee cups.
