What is the right way of using steamers for cooking?

My sister bought a food steamer for me, and she advised me to cook food in it, as the food prepared using steamer is healthy and nutritious. However, apparently I don’t know how to use steamers for cooking, as the user guide is lost somewhere at home. The steamer container is made up of metal, and it is considered best for cooking vegetables. Can somebody out there who frequently cooks on steamer, please advice me the right way of using steamers for cooking? I shall be thankful!
