How can I make a bakery quality sponge cake recipe that tastes real good?

I made a maderia sponge cake recipe last year. It came out to be extremely thick. It took like forever to bake my cake properly and then on top of that the bottom of the my cake was hard like a cookie base. It was very dry too, crumbly and didn’t at all taste good. Please help me.
