Takoyaki: Rolling up

It is quite understood when people find food cultures of some region to be very weird. Frankly speaking, I found the Japanese tradition of Body Sushi to be a bit weird. However, I did not find anything weird in eating octopus tentacles, as octopus tentacles are quite edible, except its eyes, mouth area, and viscera.

Thought the octopus tentacles are rubbery, they prove to be an excellent fast food in Japan and an excellent appetizer for a fall feast. Takoyaki, where Tako means octopus and Yaki means grilled, are dumplings are stuffed with octopus tentacles and are eaten as a snack food in Japan. Takoyaki is made in Takoyakiki, which is made out of cast iron and which contains 16 molds. These octopus balls are made out of octopus tentacles, Konnyaku or the vegan version of gelatin, shallots, pickled gingers, tenkasu(fish shavings) and Okonomiyaki sauce which is quite similar to the Worcestershire sauce. The batter is poured into molds and then it is filled with octopus stuffings and topped with tenkasu. These balls are then grilled till brown.

Dumplings were originally made with meats and Konnyaku, but Endo Tomekichi the person who founded a takoyaki shop called Aizu-ya in Osaka, remodeled with octopus tentacles. While takoyaki has come to the sidewalk stalls, people enjoy takoyaki at home, substituting octopus with fish. Similarly, those vendors who are making money with takoyaki are adding their own flavors to the batter and topping the dumplings with a variety of sauces, or making their own sauce for the dumplings.
