Which of the two is better: a meat or an oven thermometer?

I have thought about buying a food thermometer, but I am not certain about which thermometer should I buy, as I am confused between a meat thermometer and an oven thermometer. Actually, I am never able to prepare meat with perfection, whenever I prepare it in oven. The meat becomes rough due to over cooking, and it all happens despite of my adherence towards the cooking time of meat. I would really like to know from a cooking expert, what food thermometer would be useful in my context? Thanks!
