Can fitness drinks do more harm then good?

I have started going to gym and I want to know what are some fitness drinks that I can have after my exercise or workout. I really feel a desire to drink something even during my workouts. So it will be really nice if you can tell me the name of some of the fitness drinks that are healthy and will not cause harm to me. I have heard people saying that many fitness drinks do more bad then good as they contain huge amount of sodium, sugar and other addictives. So I want to know is this true? How should I make my choice of fitness drinks so that they are not harmful to me.
